What do we expect from content management systems?

Recently I’ve been thinking about expectations as related to software solutions, more specifically content management systems (CMS). These days it’s hard to find a web site that doesn’t use some method of content management. After all, we’re in the age of data and something needs to manage all that data. The days of static web sites are long gone.

There are plenty of CMSs out there and their features, abilities and benefits are discussed at length, but what about the highly important expectation factor? What do we expect a CMS to do for us? This is a question that has me curious and I want to find out what the masses think so I’ve put together a simple survey for you to take. I’d like to learn from as varied a group as possible so please share this link with your friends, clients and co-workers whether they be in design, development, or even project management and sales.

I’ll be leaving the survey open until Friday 12th November. Once I’ve compiled all the data I’ll publish a follow-up post sharing my findings with all of you for further discussion.

Thanks for your help, now here’s the survey link: http://bit.ly/9A8k6A

I’ve done a bunch of full-scale sites in WordPress but I’m starting to get frustrated with some of the limitations of the software (and the security issues that keep popping up) and I’m looking to move up. ExpressionEngine seems to be the natural next step but SilverStripe and Concrete5 both have interesting features and I’m going to test them out a bit more thoroughly.

I’m looking forward to the results of the survey as I’m be curious to hear what other developers are using and why.
