SXSW Sketch Notes 2009

At every SXSW I’ve been to I have always been sketching my notes. This year was no different.

In fact, this year was even more awesomer because I was asked to sketch up the keynote sessions for Monday and Tuesday of the Interactive track — WHOA WHOA WHOA!

Monday’s Keynote Session – James Powderly Interview

“Open source art evangelist and political activist James Powderly talks about his craft and his mission with Virginia Heffernan, who writes “The Medium” column for The New York Times Magazine.”

So for my first one, I think, it went alright. I mean, thousands of people in the room and standing in front of them drawing on this huge sheet of paper with markers with no prior thumbnail and just flying by the seat of my pants with the sketches hinging on the very words that are said…? Yah, I was pretty tight and just needed to loosen up more, but what a rush!

Tuesday’s Keynote Session – Conversations with Chris Anderson and Guy Kawasaki

“In 2006, Chris Anderson introduced the concept of the Long Tail. His soon-to-be released book will talk about the power of free. Will his theories stand up to the tough questions of Silicon Valley venture capitalist Guy Kawasaki?”

This one was AWESOME! The talk was great, and I think I was able to pace myself a lot better. In the first keynote, I was working solely in black as my base and you know better than to do that. This second keynote, I worked in a flesh color that I was able to sketch out what everything was looking like while the conversation was going on. I was also able to quickly capture snippets of dialogue more quickly, keeping them truer to form for “sketch notes.” Yah, this one was fun.

Thanks again to Keith Robinson for hookin’ me up with Shawn O’Keefe to get the ball rollin’ with SXSW. And also to Karen Ingram for letting me play the “Sketch Notes” game with her (she was on the opposite side of the stage kicking mucho ass).

Check out more of the pics on Flickr.

Nice work as always, brotha! I agree that you were definitely a lot looser on the second sketch. But both are pretty amazing, to say the least…

Great job, and I hope you and Travis had an awesome time out there!

Wonderful. There is a subculture of visual recorders at SXSW. I’d love to see all the drawings. I’m part of it…I posted my SXSW Interactive drawings on a facebook group: Bridging Futures Austin

I’d love to hear your comments on my notes.
