Rackspace - 5 months later

On May 25th we decided to move hosting companies for the last time. I say the last time because short of buying our own server there wasn’t anywhere else for us to go.
When we left the “host whose name will not be mentioned” for Rackspace we were a bit nervous. The cost was three times more and frankly, we’d been burned so often in the past year we were a bit damaged.
I’m happy to report after 5 months of working and living with Rackspace, we couldn’t be happier. Our move to Rackspace was definitely one of the smartest decisions we’ve made as a company in the past 4 years.
Not only is Rackspace responsive and reliable, they’ve given us our business back. Prior to moving we spent, on average, 3-5 hours per week managing hosting issues. These issues ranged from sites being down to email. Well mostly email. Since moving to Rackspace we’ve cut that time to zero. Literally. We’ve maybe spent 3-5 hours TOTAL, managing hosting issues in the the past 5 months.
The pivotal Rackspace moment was realizing Rackspace pays for itself in the amount of time saved not managing hosting issues. So thanks Rackspace! If you’re contemplating a move to Rackspace, don’t wait any longer. You won’t be sorry.

Is there a reason why you didn’t go with Mosso (e.g. the designer’s Rackspace) instead of Rackspace itself?

We actually weren’t aware of Mosso at the time. They didn’t come up in our search for a host replacement and they don’t seem to be at the tier we were looking for stability and resource-wise anyway. Don’t get me wrong, what they have sounds awesome and I have seen good things about them across the interweb since then. I’ve even thought of moving my personal sites there.
Rackspace is fully managed and we wanted someone to completely hand the hosting keys over to. Granted that’s why we pay quite a bit more than somewhere like Mosso, but the support response, uptime and level of service have been worth the money spent many times over.

Mosso is also affiliated with Rackspace. It could be a good choice if money is an issue when you are making your hosting decision. To reiterate what Travis said it really came down to finding the best host, whatever the cost.

I’d also point to the Mosso status page. Although there’s always errors and problems they seem to be quite frequent and we can’t put our clients into that situation.

And here I was thinking that Mosso was expensive! For me, $100/mo is too much, as $50/mo is more in my price range.
I guess it really depends on what is hosted with your plan and how much of that space you can resell back to customers. If you offer hosting as part of your service package then Rackspace seems to be the better option, even though Mosso is positioned that way.
Having gone down the colocated server route before (with the resulting stings, burns and scars) a well-managed server from Rackspace is the smarter option.
