Mobile Web Design book preview

Yesterday Cameron Moll released a preview of his upcoming book Mobile Web Design. Once I got the email announcing the release, I headed over to download a copy. Apparently everyone else did too, because the server was down. I went back later that night, grabbed a copy and dug in.

I’ve been waiting for the release of this book for a while. Hearing Cameron talk about traditional web design at Refresh06 convinced me he had a unique insight, so I was excited to hear his take on mobile web design too.

The first thing I noticed about the book is I couldn’t find it on Amazon. It appears Cameron is taking the independent publishing route, much like the Getting Real book from 37 Signals. The preview leaves out 70 or so pages of content, but there’s enough there to get a good feel for the structure of the book. Mobile Web Design is written for pretty much anyone looking to get involved in the mobile web.

It makes no real assumptions about skill level or previous mobile knowledge:

If you’re in a position to develop for, manage, or give advice regarding your organization’s foray into—or extended development of—a web strategy for mobile devices, then this book is for you.

Cameron and others think the mobile web is the next big thing. In the opening of his book he pegs the mobile web as “the biggest thing since sliced images”, an assertion he backs up with hard data in the section “2.7 Billion Mobile Users in Context”. If you want to see what all the hype is about, the book drops on August 28th.
